Workplace Flexibility Forum

Check out the video on the home page of President Obama and the closing statements of the White House Flexibility Forum. So exciting that the White House and the Obamas believe in the need for Flexible Work Options!

Small Businesses Embrace Flexibility/ How Is Flexibility Working in Your Small Business?

You may be surprised to learn that approximately 80% of U.S. businesses have fewer than 20 employees (U.S.Census Bureau, 2006). Recent findings reported by the Sloan Work and Family Research Network about small businesses and flexibility show that small businesses are embracing flexibility practices as an important business strategy. Read the findings below then let us know what you think. Are you a small business employer? What practices and policies are working for your employees and your bottom line? How do you measure your return on investment when you use flexibility strategies?
▪ Employees in small firms with 50 to 99 employees are more likely (64%) than
employees of large companies with 1,000 or more employees (47%) to report
that their “supervisors are encouraged to be supportive of employees with family
needs by finding solutions that work for both employees and the organization”
(Galinsky, Bond, & Sakai with Kim & Giuntoli, 2008).
▪ There is no statistically significant difference in the flexibility and supportiveness of small (50 to 99 employees) and large (more than 1,000 employees)employers (Galinsky, Bond, & Sakai with Kim & Giuntoli, 2008).

President Obama Announces Council on Women and Girls

How exciting was yesterdays news that Obama has announced a Council on Women and Girls?  In many ways I am surprised that one did not already exist (ok maybe not).  However, so glad that one does exist now.  One of the main issues that will be looked at by this council is work/life balance.  Michelle has stated that her platform as First Lady is military families and work/life balance.  Michelle is a great example of a woman/mother who was trying to continue her career and raise her children.  Making this a top priority for the White House is one big step towards the discussion of making it work for approximately 5.6 million women in the US.  Just the beginning!
